Low-voltage cabling is commonly used in industry applications, for instance in variable-speed drives, and in power distribution grids, where it provides and guarantees safe and uninterrupted power delivery. Hence, on-line diagnosis of cable condition and prognosis of the remaining life-time of cable are essential functions. In this paper, a cable diagnosis method based on broadband impedance spectroscopy, which can be applied by channel frequency-response analysis and implemented with high-frequency band power line communication modems is presented and evaluated with laboratory tests. It is shown that the proposed method is applicable for detecting and locating faults in low-voltage cables.

Low-voltage cabling is commonly used in industry applications, for instance in variable-speed drives, and in power distribution grids, where it provides and guarantees safe and uninterrupted power delivery. Cable is a transport medium capable of providing a full range of narrowband and broadband applications. With the advent of hybrid fiber/coax transport facilities, cable is positioned to provide a transport medium superior to the telephone company local loop for broadband applications. Personal communications services (PCS) is a specific application that has caused the cable television industry to examine several different approaches to exploiting the cable television network. Cable's focus is on several wireless telephony solutions which include transport for cellular microcells, PCS transport for third-party providers, and an infrastructure for cable operators who choose to provide end-to-end FCS. But before cable enters PCS, a number of business and public policy issues remain to be resolved.

The paper suggests a general approach to the automation of control and monitoring of technological processes of communication cables manufacturing. The distinguishing feature of this approach is that each local stabilization system of technological operating parameters is not built and optimized autonomously but in conjunction with other local systems structured into a multi-level system. This system is described by hierarchical mathematical model connecting operational merit indexes of cable production with introduced generalized quality parameters which are controlled by its indirect estimates. The estimates of generalized quality parameters are obtained with the use of algorithm of measured cable primary parameters real-time performing. It guarantees the highest cable quality available with the existing production equipment.

The paper suggests a general approach to the automation of control and monitoring of technological processes of communication cables manufacturing. A system with steel bars, cables and arrestors is studied and results of experimental verification are provided.
